The Beauty Of Content Discovery Doesn’t Exist for Audio

For anyone who does audio or podcasting content, it’s really important to understand this core element when it comes to getting you stuff heard:

And to understand this, let’s go down the path I had to discovering a new youtube channel last night:

Okay, so I’m a HUGE Albert Camus fan. He’s a philosopher who’s influenced much of my life.

Scrolling on youtube last night and guess what popped up in my feed.

A video around Albert Camus, just posted, 26minutes of juicy philosophy.

Guess what I did?I…clicked on it.

Because I wanted to consume it.

I think so many times in the content discovery process, we forget WHY people click on things and consume them.

The title was fine, thumbnail was fine, but the fact that it showed up on my feed was the REASON I discovered it. That channel didn’t run any ads, didn’t spam twitter with their youtube video — they just made a piece of quality content and trusted the youtube algorithm to find the right people to show that content to.

This is why YT is by far the best platform on the planet. Random person somewhere in the world makes an Albert Camus video.

Finds a viewer in little town in New Jersey.

Algorithm at the center of that discovery process making that digital magic happen.

Now, what does this have to do with audio?Audio does not have a platform or a algorithmic distribution model to create this type of digital magic for audio discovery.

It has….RSS feeds.

If you disagree with my analysis here, PLEASE comment and let’s discuss.

Without the method I described above^, nothing changes. If you do a philosophy podcast, guess what!

You need people who care about philosophy to discover it.

You are just a content creator. You can’t move a mountain.

A platform is what is required, with specific targeting incentives, to do that heavy lifting for you.

YouTube did the hard work of matching me with that channel.

That channel gets my attention, I get interesting content, YouTube stays relevant for providing a valuable service.

Forget middleman, they are THE MAN. This doesn’t happen easily. They got it done. Podcasting and audio does not have this platform.

No, it’s not spotty or apple. They’ve got their exclusive shows to stuff down your throat. All respect, it’s just not them.

This is why we built Audea — we want to fundamentally change how audio content is discovered and distributed, to actually bring discovery to audio at scale.
